Tanzania set for early Uyo arrival ahead of Nigeria AFCON 2027 qualifier

Tanzania are expected to arrive in Uyo on Sunday, 8 November, five days before their AFCON 2027 qualifier against Nigeria, giving the Taifa Stars more preparation time than the Super Eagles.
Nigeria will host Tanzania at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday, 13 November, before the two sides meet again in Dar es Salaam on 17 November.
The Super Eagles have three points from their opening two Group L matches and are three points behind leaders Guinea-Bissau, who have six. Nigeria’s points tally follows a 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau in Bissau in September.
Tanzania are still without a victory in the group. They began with a 2-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau and then drew 1-1 with Madagascar.
However, the Taifa Stars have already secured their place at AFCON 2027 because Tanzania are co-hosting the tournament with Kenya and Uganda, according to Afrik-Foot.
Gamondi names 24-player squad
Tanzania coach Miguel Gamondi has selected 24 players for the two fixtures, with an even split between those playing domestically and those based abroad.
The squad includes 12 home-based players and 12 who play outside Tanzania. Afrik-Foot reported that Gamondi intends his team to press, retain possession and attack, rather than focus solely on defensive play.
That approach will be tested in Uyo, where Tanzania will have time to train together before facing a Nigeria side whose preparation could be more limited.
Many of Eric Chelle’s Europe-based players are not expected to join the Nigeria camp until after their weekend club matches. That leaves the Super Eagles with a shorter period in which to work on their shape and tactical organisation before the first meeting.
Nigeria have also gone five matches without keeping a clean sheet, increasing the importance of making the most of the time available once the full squad is assembled.
Tanzania’s early arrival does not make them favourites for the match, but it gives them a chance to settle in and prepare as a group. The visitors will not be able to be dismissed as a side arriving without adequate preparation.
The pressure on Nigeria remains unchanged. The Super Eagles need results from both matches if they are to strengthen their position in Group L, while a clean sheet at home on 13 November would provide the clearest indication that the limited preparation time has not undermined their performance.
