Barcelona come to decision on Frenkie de Jong’s future amid Man United links

Spanish giants Barcelona have come to a definitive decision on the future of midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to reports.

And the news will no doubt be met with widespread approval on the part of those hopeful of seeing the Dutchman continue to showcase his talents in Blaugrana colours for years to come.

De Jong, of course, has endured something of a hit-and-miss campaign to date.

Amid a remarkably inconsistent term on the part of Barca’s squad as a whole, the gifted midfielder has often found himself singled out as something of a scapegoat, amid suggestions that de Jong too often simply allows the game to pass him by.

And such qualms on the part of the Catalan giants’ fanbase, in turn, have culminated in inevitable speculation hinting at a potential parting of ways between Barcelona and the club’s big-money 2019 arrival come the summer.

One such club, meanwhile, hotly tipped as a potential landing spot for de Jong have come in the form of Manchester United, where the 24-year-old would of course be reunited with the incoming Erik ten Hag.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media on Thursday is anything to go by, then de Jong moving on, as things stand, looks altogether unlikely.

This comes amid claims on the part of the reliable Santi Ovalle that Xavi Hernandez has informed Barcelona’s board that his midfield star is not for sale under any circumstances.

Mallorca test

Turning attentions back towards matters on the pitch, Barca will of course be back in action this coming weekend.

On the back of an alarming stretch of three defeats in four, including a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Rayo Vallecano at the Camp Nou last weekend, the Blaugrana will be hopeful of a return to winning ways when they welcome relegation-battling RCD Mallorca to Catalunya on Sunday night.

Their recent dip in form means that Xavi’s troops head into the weekend sitting 2nd in the La Liga table, but now level with Sevilla below them and just two points clear of Atletico Madrid in 4th.
