Europa League semis: Frankfurt edge ahead at West Ham, Leipzig leave it late against Rangers

Eintracht Frankfurt will take a narrow lead to Germany for their UEFA Europa League semi-final return  against West Ham after a 2-1 win at the London Stadium on Thursday night.

The German side were dominant throughout the match and were rewarded as Ansgar Knauff and Daichi Kamada scored early in either half to give them an advantage.

It was expected to be a lively match, but a goal after just 51 seconds was still a surprise.

Ansgar Knauff got to the end of a Rafael Borre cross and headed home to silence the home fans.

The Hammers however found their way back into the match and were unlucky not to pull level a few minutes later when dangerman Jarrod Bowen found a way through the middle but his effort cannoned against the post.

They were level though after 21 minutes, with the goal arriving from yet another setpiece.

Kurt Zouma flashed his header across goal, which was met by Michail Antonio to stab it home and send the fans into wild celebrations.

Despite their dominance after the equaliser, West Ham failed to genuinely threaten the Germans and could have fallen behind again had Knauff not sliced wide with just Alphonse Areola to beat.

They got their goal, which proved to be the winner, in the 54th minute from a free-flowing move, Daichi Kamada eventually turning in the rebound after Areola had parried Djibril Sow’s shot.

Kamada could have added a third late on but his effort hit the post, either side of West Ham doing so twice, with substitute Said Benrahma shaving the upright from distance before Bowen’s spectacular overhead kick thumped the crossbar in added time.

In another match, a late volley from Angeliño secured victory for Leipzig and a 1-0 advantage against a disciplined Rangers side.

The hosts were favourites for the match at the Red Bull Arena, but came up against a stubborn Scottish side that proved a hard nut to crack.

In the end, Angelino’s goal, five minutes from time proved enough on the night.
