Vincent Kompany says Bayern Munich’s draw with Arsenal was a fair result

Vincent Kompany admitted Bayern Munich were frustrated to concede late in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Allianz Arena, but accepted the result was fair after both sides enjoyed strong spells in their Champions League contest.
The Bayern manager believed his side had created enough opportunities to win, while acknowledging that Arsenal had several periods of superiority before scoring the equaliser in the closing stages.
“We are in a phase where we are playing a very large number of matches, so we have to move on from this game quickly and think about the next one,” Kompany told Mundo Deportivo. “We faced a strong opponent, and we felt that and saw it clearly.”
Bayern created chances but lost momentum
Kompany said Bayern produced more dangerous opportunities than he had expected, although their attacking momentum faded during the final 10 to 15 minutes.
“I think we had some good periods in the match and created some clear chances that I did not expect us to have in such numbers,” he said. “It is unfortunate that we struggled during the last 10 or 15 minutes, which caused us to lose some momentum.”
He added: “We felt we were capable of winning and perhaps deserved to do so, but the opposition were extremely strong and the game was never settled at any point. The equaliser we conceded late on was unfortunate.”
The Belgian also described the contest as largely even, with both teams pressing and attempting to reach the attacking third. However, he felt Bayern threatened more consistently in dangerous areas.
“Arsenal pressed with the same intensity as we did, and we were dangerous in those moments,” Kompany said. “We did not always choose the right time to reach the final third, but I think we got there more often than Arsenal and created danger, including two or three situations where we had a numerical advantage.”
Despite his disappointment at dropping two points, Kompany rejected the idea that Bayern had completely dominated the match.
“We faced a top-level opponent, and I would not say either team had total control because Arsenal also had periods when they were the better side,” he said. “The result may be fair, even though we created clearer chances.”
Kompany praises Kane’s movement
Kompany praised Harry Kane, who was named player of the match after scoring one goal and providing the assist for Alphonso Davies.
He said the England striker’s awareness of when to drop deeper or move into different areas gives Bayern additional attacking options and makes him difficult to defend.
“Kane has a special instinct that tells him when to drop back and when to move into other areas of the pitch,” Kompany said. “I think Arsenal did something similar with their forwards today, and that makes the defenders’ task extremely difficult because they cannot mark a player who stays in one position.”
Kompany added that Kane’s movement creates opportunities for him to use his passing range.
“When the two centre-backs step forward to press and Harry gets some time on the ball, he can show his great quality with long and accurate passes,” he said. “That helps us get beyond the defensive line and create dangerous chances.”
The draw leaves Bayern Munich on 5 points after three Champions League matches. Their next test is against Atletico de Madrid on 3 November.
