AFCON 2023: Garba Lawal warns NFF on Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles future

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Former Nigeria international, Garba Lawal has called on Nigerians to be patient with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and allow them to make what he believed would be the best possible decision in the interest of Nigerian football.

Lawal congratulated the Super Eagles for their fine performance at the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire but has warned that a hasty decision regarding the coach’s future might be costly.

“Most Nigerians didn’t know who is Peseiro (Jose) until NFF brought him on board,” Lawal told Brila FM.

“It is those that employed him that will decide his fate. They are the ones that pay his wages I believe.

“I believe they have Executive members and a technical committee to discuss his future.” He concluded.

The Super Eagles under the tutelage of Jose Peseiro reached the final of AFCON 2023 where host, Cote d’Ivoire secured their third title after a 2-1 win over Nigeria.

The contract of Peseiro as coach of the national team expired after the competition and is fancied to earn a contract extension after meeting the semi-final target at the Afcon 2023.

However, reports making rounds claims that the Algerian Football Federation has contacted Peseiro as one of the coaches expected to replace Belmadi.
