Gombe United bid Nigeria Premier Football League goodbye after Sunshine loss

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Gombe United have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following a 2-0 defeat to Sunshine Stars at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe, on Sunday.

Two first-half goals from Promise Awosanmi and Lucky Nwafor sealed their fate, condemning them to drop to the second-tier league.

Awosanmi opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and Nwafor doubled the lead in the 28th minute, leaving the hosts unable to mount a comeback.

With only four games and 12 points left to play for, Gombe United have been confirmed as the first team to be relegated from the top flight this season.

Currently, they sit at the bottom of the table with just 25 points from 34 games. The team can no longer surpass the points tally of Sporting Lagos and Bayelsa United, who each have 42 points.

As a result, Gombe United will compete in the Nigeria National League (NNL) for the 2024/2025 season. The three remaining relegation spots will see a battle among Heartland FC, Akwa United, Bayelsa United, and Sporting Lagos.
