“I don’t go where I’m not needed” – Onome Ebi laments Paris 2024 Olympics snub

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria veteran, Onome Ebi has denied rumours of her disrespecting the Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum or the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) via her social media posts.

The 41-year-old who is a veteran of numerous international tournaments, including six Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games, was left out of the 18-woman squad list for the Paris 2024 Olympics which led to some uproar among parties involved.

Recalled that NigerianFootball reported last month that the Super Falcons captain furiously lashed out at those claiming she begged for an Olympics spot in a scathing attack on NFF.

Randy Waldrum’s team failed to qualify for the knockout stages after losing all three games in the group stage to Brazil, Spain and Japan, respectively, scoring only one goal in the competition.

Since then, Ebi has been the subject of negativity as fans look out for her posts on social media pointing out her bad energy towards the team.

Recently, she made a post congratulating Brazil and their captain, Marta, for reaching the final of the Olympics but somehow many believed the post was a dig at NFF for not inviting her to the Olympics while Brazil entrusted 38-year-old Marta with the task.

The defender however insisted that she respects the coach’s decision and remains a significant figure in Nigerian football.

Responding to critics, Onome took to her official social media page, X, to clear airs which however fell on the deaf ears of her followers.

“My posts are never 4 Super Falcons or the NFF 🫡🇳🇬💪. I respect D players & all management of the team,” she posted on X.

“Bloggers just find ways 2 put my name up 4 drag, which baffles me. Coach wanted younger players, and I respected that. I don’t go where I’m not needed,” she concluded.
