“‘They sent me to buy Maggi, but I was watching Awoniyi instead” – Boniface

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international duo Victor Boniface and Taiwo Awoniyi were in high spirits as they arrived in Kigali for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda.

Despite some criticism following his performance against Benin Republic, Boniface maintained his playful demeanor, engaging in lighthearted banter with Awoniyi.

On the bus ride, the 23-year-old Boniface jokingly asked Awoniyi to “borrow him 100 pounds,” as the two playfully debated who was the more financially successful player.

In a video that quickly went viral on his social media, Boniface reminisced about watching Awoniyi’s impressive performance at the U17 World Cup.

Boniface recounted, “I watched you during the U17 World Cup final. I was actually sent to buy Maggi Knorr, but I didn’t get it—I was too busy watching you. So, please, give me 100 pounds. You’ve got the money!”

Awoniyi had been a standout player for the Flying Eagles at the 2013 U17 World Cup, where he scored four goals and helped Nigeria secure the title.

The camaraderie and humor between the two players highlight the strong bond within the Nigerian squad as they prepare for their crucial match.
