NPFL MD 2: Remo Stars outshine Sunshine as Rivers compound Heartland woes

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Matchday two of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season got underway in Ikenne and Port Harcourt with home teams picking victories on Saturday.

At the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Remo Stars pipped Sunshine Stars 1-0 in the first South West derby of the season.

Shuaibu Ibrahim’s goal in the seventh minute separated both sides after 90 minutes despite the Akure Gunner’s late attempt to get the equalizer.

The win ensured that Remo Stars secured victories in their first two league games of the season.

They defeated Abia Warriors 2-0 away from home in their opening match.

Meanwhile, Rivers United kicked off their 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign in style, thrashing Heartland 3-1 in their first home game at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Taofeek Otaniyi’s early header set the tone before Kabir Abdullahi sealed the deal with a brilliant second-half brace.

The loss compounded Emmanuel Amunike’s side woes after consecutive losses in their first two games.

Matchday two games continue on Sunday with more league games across eight centers.
