2024 CAF Awards: Super Falcons retain team of the year prize, dedicate award to First Lady

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team won the 2024 African Women’s Team of the Year during the CAF Awards on Monday.

The nine-time African champions won the prize ahead of Morocco and African champions South Africa.

After winning the award last year, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau received the prize on behalf of the Super Falcons.

“I must say I am happy to stand here again. Last year, I was here to receive the same award. That shows the commitment and hard work we are putting in to ensure we maintain the standard of women’s football,” Gusau said.

“I just want to call on those that want to catch up on Nigeria in women’s football should work hard because we are not sleeping.

“We will continue to work hard. This award is dedicated to our first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu who has been supporting women’s football in Nigeria.”

After a 16-year hiatus, the Super Falcons returned to the women’s football tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympics ahead of South Africa.

Despite being drawn in a tough group against Copa America Femenina Champions Brazil, world champions Spain, and former World Cup winners Japan, the team put up a gallant display at the Olympics.

A 1-0 loss to Brazil and Spain was followed by another defeat to Japan as the team bowed out from the group stage.

The gallant display cut the attention of CAF and the voters (national team coaches and captain) to win the award once again for another year.
