CAF Opens Investigation Into Post-Match Chaos After Algeria vs Nigeria AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially launched an investigation into the ugly scenes that followed Saturday night’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria.

In a statement released on Sunday, CAF confirmed that several Algerian players and members of the technical crew confronted match officials immediately after the final whistle.

The situation reportedly escalated when some members of the Algerian contingent followed the referees into the stadium tunnel—an action CAF described as “unacceptable” and a clear breach of the competition’s disciplinary regulations.

CAF also revealed that it is reviewing reports of altercations involving journalists and other media personnel in the aftermath of the match, as tensions spilled beyond the field of play.

The highly charged encounter, played at the Stade de Marrakech, ended in a 2–0 victory for Super Eagles, with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealing a semi-final spot for the three-time African champions.

The defeat sparked strong reactions from the Algerian camp, culminating in the post-match incidents now under scrutiny.

According to CAF, all relevant documentation—including match officials’ reports, referee submissions, and available video footage—will be carefully examined as part of the investigation process.

The continental body stressed that it takes such incidents seriously, particularly at a decisive stage of Africa’s flagship tournament.

CAF added that appropriate disciplinary measures, if any, will be announced once the investigations are concluded.

The development adds another layer of controversy to the high-stakes quarter-final, as AFCON 2025 moves into its decisive semi-final phase.
