Chiamaka Nnadozie Targets WAFCON Glory as NFF Deepens Integrity Drive

Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, says the Super Falcons will adopt a cautious, match-by-match approach as they begin their quest to retain the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.

The reigning African Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, who has won the continental award for three consecutive years, said the 10-time African champions are determined to avoid complacency as they prepare to face Egypt, Zambia and tournament debutants Malawi in Group C of the expanded 16-team competition, scheduled to hold from July 26 to August 16.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Nnadozie stressed that the team’s objectives remain clear: successfully defend their continental crown and secure qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“We will take it one match at a time because we cannot afford to stumble at any stage as a result of over-confidence. We will be focused squarely on the double targets of FIFA World Cup ticket and retaining the trophy,” she said.

The Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper welcomed the expansion of the tournament from 12 to 16 teams, noting that it would increase competition but insisted the Super Falcons remain fully focused.

She also dismissed suggestions that some groups are easier than others, pointing out that African women’s football has become increasingly competitive.

“Right now in Africa, there are no longer minnows. There will be a lot of surprises because the so-called smaller teams will be eager to prove themselves. Every team deserves respect, and for us, we know what we are going for—the trophy and the World Cup ticket.”
