Issa Diop: Ipswich Town sign Morocco World Cup defender from Fulham on long-term deal

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Morocco international defender Issa Diop from Fulham on a four-year contract, in a major statement of intent ahead of their return to the Premier League.

The 29-year-old centre-back joins the newly promoted side after an eye-catching 2026 World Cup campaign, where he played five matches for Morocco and scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal against the Netherlands that helped send the “Atlas Lions” into the quarter-finals.

Ipswich confirmed the deal on Wednesday, saying Diop had agreed a contract running until the summer of 2030 after successfully passing his medical. The club did not disclose the transfer fee, but European reports suggest the move is worth around €10m (£8.5m).

Diop’s arrival gives Ipswich top-flight experience and physical presence at the back as they prepare for their first Premier League season since their promotion.

The move comes on the back of Diop’s resurgence with the Moroccan national team, where his performances on the global stage have enhanced his reputation. His late goal against the Netherlands in 2026 proved decisive in Morocco’s progression from the group phase and underlined his threat in both penalty areas.

Premier League pedigree and record move to West Ham

Born in France and of Moroccan descent, Diop began his professional career at Toulouse, breaking into the first team as a teenager and captaining the Ligue 1 side at an unusually young age.

His development in France earned him a high-profile switch to West Ham United in 2018, in what was then a club-record fee for the Hammers. He quickly adapted to English football, establishing himself as a regular in the Premier League.

After four seasons at West Ham, Diop signed for Fulham in 2022. Since then he has made more than 75 Premier League appearances for the west London club, taking his total number of matches in the English top flight to over 170.

Ipswich Town, who have recently returned to the top tier after years outside the Premier League, are moving aggressively to strengthen their squad for the demands of the coming campaign.
