Benfica sign Nigeria teen star Akekoromowei on long-term deal

Nigeria Under-20 forward Janet Akekoromowei has joined Portuguese champions Benfica on a long-term contract, describing the move as a “privilege” and setting her sights on winning trophies in Lisbon.

The 18-year-old Falconets striker has signed an initial two-year deal with the option of a further two seasons, committing her future to the six-time Portuguese women’s champions.

Akekoromowei arrives from Nigerian side Bayelsa Queens and becomes the latest player from the country’s youth set-up to move into one of Europe’s leading women’s leagues.

Speaking to Benfica’s official website after completing the move, Akekoromowei said she was eager to make an impact at her new club.

”I’m happy! Benfica is a great club, it’s a privilege to be here to help the team win trophies and do beautiful things,” Akekoromowei told the club’s official website.

The forward made her name with Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s team, the Falconets, where her performances attracted attention from European scouts.

She stressed that her ambition at Benfica goes beyond merely adapting to a new league, insisting she wants to play a central role in the club’s pursuit of silverware.

‘I want to be part of this family’

Akekoromowei underlined her determination to integrate quickly into the squad and contribute on the pitch as Benfica continue to build a side capable of competing domestically and in Europe.

”Benfica is a great club, I know that! I want to be part of this family, I’m ready to give my best, help my teammates and achieve our goals for the season,” said the newcomer to the squad of the six-time national champions,” added Akekoromowei.

Her reference to the 2026/27 campaign reflects the long-term vision behind the deal, with the optional extension taking her stay in Lisbon through to that season if exercised.

The Portuguese champions have been strengthening steadily in recent years as they look to dominate the women’s game in the country and establish themselves as regulars in the latter stages of European competition.

Akekoromowei also revealed that the words and example of fellow Nigerian Christy Ucheibe, who previously starred for Benfica, played a significant part in her decision to join the club.

“Christy Ucheibe plays for the senior national team, I saw her play for Benfica and win titles. I want to achieve the same. She told me many good things about Benfica,” she declared.

Ucheibe, a Nigeria senior international, became a key figure in Benfica’s midfield before moving on, and her success has helped open doors for other young Nigerian players seeking careers in Europe.

For Akekoromowei, following that path provides both motivation and a clear benchmark.
