Yira Sor in advanced talks over Amedspor switch as Turkish Super Lig pulls in more Nigeria stars

Yira Sor is in advanced negotiations over a move to Amedspor as the newly promoted club targets another high-profile Nigeria international ahead of their first season in the Turkish Super Lig.

The 26-year-old winger, currently on the books of Belgian side KRC Genk, is the subject of ongoing talks between the two clubs, with Amedspor pushing to finalise a deal before the new campaign kicks off. Although no agreement has yet been reached on the transfer fee and add-ons, discussions are described as being at an advanced stage.

Amedspor, who earned promotion to the Turkish top flight under head coach Besnik Hasi, have already made a statement by bringing in Gift Orban on a season-long loan from Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim. If Sor completes his move, he will join his fellow Nigerian at the Diyarbakir club, with both forwards expected to play central roles in the team’s attack.

The prospective transfer underlines the growing pull of the Turkish Super Lig for Nigeria internationals. Victor Osimhen is already the league’s record signing, while Paul Onuachu finished as top scorer last season. This summer has seen further movement, with Chidozie Awaziem signing for Konyaspor and Gift Orban sealing his switch to Amedspor. Kelechi Iheanacho, meanwhile, turned down the chance to rejoin Celtic in favour of a move to Turkish second-tier side Bursaspor.

Genk face contract dilemma

Sor’s contractual situation is a key factor in Genk’s willingness to negotiate. He has only one year remaining on his current deal, and the Belgian club are not planning to offer an extension.

That leaves Genk under pressure to sell this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of next season. Amedspor are looking to capitalise on that position as they seek to strengthen a squad built to survive in the Super Lig and compete with more established clubs.

Despite his injury-disrupted time in Belgium, Sor has retained a reputation as one of Nigeria’s quickest attacking players, able to operate on the left flank or across the forward line.

From Port Harcourt to European spotlight

Sor’s story began in Port Harcourt with Family Love Academy before he moved to Lagos-based 36 Lion FC, where his pace and direct style of play started to draw attention from scouts outside Nigeria.

In February 2021 he joined Czech club Banik Ostrava and made an immediate impact. During the first half of the 2021-22 season he produced three goals and five assists, form that earned him a transfer to Czech giants Slavia Prague in January 2022.

It was at Slavia that Sor made his name on the European stage. In the UEFA Europa Conference League, he scored two goals against Fenerbahce and another brace against Austrian side LASK. His standout performance came in February 2022, when he struck twice in a 3-2 victory over Fenerbahce, a display that boosted his profile across the continent and highlighted his threat against top-level opposition.

Genk move and Nigeria breakthrough

Those performances persuaded Genk to invest around €6.5m to sign Sor in January 2023. While he has shown flashes of his ability in Belgium, injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress and prevented him from becoming a regular starter.

Even so, he has contributed goals and assists in both the Belgian Pro League and the UEFA Europa League, underlining his effectiveness when fit. Over the 2025-26 campaign, Sor made 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring six times and providing one assist.

His club form finally translated into senior international recognition in March 2026, when he made his long-awaited debut for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, having previously represented the Flying Eagles at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.

If Amedspor can now secure his signature, Sor will join a growing contingent of Nigerian players using the Turkish Super Lig as a platform to relaunch or accelerate their European careers, while the newly promoted side continue their push to assemble a squad capable of staying in the division.
