The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has postponed its 2026 Elective Congress by one day, moving the event from Saturday, September 26, to Sunday, September 27, in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
The Elective Congress, which will usher in a new Executive Committee to oversee the affairs of Nigerian football for the next four years, will still be held in Lafia as originally planned.
The decision was approved during an extraordinary virtual General Assembly of the NFF on Wednesday. NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), explained that the adjustment became necessary following the scheduling of the Super Eagles’ opening qualification match for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations against Madagascar.
According to Gusau, after consultations with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the fixture was fixed for Friday, September 25, 2026. He noted that several candidates contesting in the federation’s elections are expected to be involved in the national team’s engagement, making it impractical for them to travel to Lafia in time for the congress the following day.
To address the conflict, the NFF Executive Committee convened the extraordinary General Assembly and proposed shifting the Elective Congress to Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The proposal received unanimous backing after it was moved and seconded by members of Congress, officially confirming the new date for the federation’s elections.
