Jamal Musiala concern after Bayern Munich star collapses against RB Leipzig
Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala is being monitored after he suddenly collapsed during his side’s 3-1 win over RB Leipzig, just 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
The 23-year-old went down in the 84th minute without making contact with an opposition player, prompting teammates and Leipzig players to rush towards him and call for medical assistance.
Max Eberl, Bayern Munich’s sporting director, said after the match: “The most important thing is that he is fine. There is nothing to say about anything else.”
An emergency doctor who had been sitting near the corner flag immediately ran on to the pitch, followed by paramedics carrying a stretcher. A large group of players gathered around Musiala as medical staff treated him.
Bayern’s medical team acted quickly. Ismael Saibari supported Musiala’s head, physiotherapist Jerry Hoffmann placed a damp sponge around his neck and Alphonso Davies loosened the laces on his team-mate’s boot.
There was visible relief when one of the paramedics gave a thumbs-up, indicating that Musiala’s condition had improved. He was then able to stand and leave the pitch, although he appeared slightly unsteady as he walked towards the dressing room alongside Hoffmann and Bayern team doctor Dr Jochen Han.
According to German newspaper Bild, Musiala experienced a sudden spell of dizziness while on the pitch. The report suggested that the high temperature, which reached about 33C, may have affected him and contributed to circulation problems.
However, the incident raised concern because Musiala had been on the field for only 15 minutes after entering the game as a substitute.
The episode comes during a difficult period in the midfielder’s recovery from a serious injury suffered on 5 July 2025 at the FIFA Club World Cup. That injury included a fracture to his fibula and has made it difficult for him to regain the physical and technical level he showed before the setback.
Musiala marked his return to action on 17 January after several months out, but subsequently experienced further ankle problems. His efforts to recover full fitness have therefore continued to be interrupted.
Following a disappointing appearance at a major international tournament, Musiala underwent surgery to remove a metal plate from his left foot. He missed Bayern’s training camps at Tegernsee and in Asia, instead following a rehabilitation programme and completing individual sessions.
The player also sacrificed a significant part of his summer holiday in an attempt to return to full fitness. He only resumed team training last Monday, as Bayern began preparing for the coming season.
His collapse against Leipzig has brought renewed attention to whether he has fully recovered physically. Nevertheless, current expectations are that Musiala will return to training within the next few days, with the club waiting to assess whether the latest incident affects his preparation programme.
Musiala spoke several weeks ago about the challenges he had faced since sustaining the injury. He said: “Although it is sometimes difficult, I have learned a lot this year.”
The initial indications do not point to a serious problem, but Bayern will continue to monitor his condition closely. Musiala has yet to fully rediscover the physical and technical form he displayed before his injury.
Bayern will hope the incident at Leipzig was only a temporary reaction to fatigue and the heat. The wider question, however, is whether Musiala can finally put his run of injury problems behind him and return to his best.
