Chibuike Nwaiwu handed two-match UEFA ban after Trabzonspor red card

Chibuike Nwaiwu has been suspended for two matches by the UEFA Disciplinary Committee after being sent off during Trabzonspor’s 1-0 defeat by Ferencvaros in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off, according to Haberler.

The Super Eagles defender was shown a straight red card in the sixth minute of stoppage time at Papara Park on 20 August. UEFA ruled that the dismissal was for violent conduct.

As a result, Nwaiwu will miss Trabzonspor’s second-leg meeting with Ferencvaros in Hungary on Thursday, 27 August. The defender’s punishment will not end with that fixture, however, as he will have one further European match to serve after completing the return leg.

Nwaiwu’s dismissal came late in a closely contested match which Trabzonspor ultimately lost by a single goal. Ferencvaros took the lead in the 17th minute through Kristoffer Zachariassen, and the Hungarian side held on despite Trabzonspor creating chances to equalise.

Trabzonspor now face the difficult task of overturning the deficit in the return fixture if they are to reach the UEFA Europa League league phase. Victory by more than one goal in Hungary would secure progress for the Turkish club.

The suspension leaves Trabzonspor without one of their defenders for a crucial match in their European campaign. Nwaiwu’s absence is particularly significant because the team must score at least twice to overturn the first-leg result without requiring extra-time considerations.

Ferencvaros will take a 1-0 advantage into Thursday’s fixture, having protected their lead after Zachariassen’s early goal at Papara Park. Trabzonspor were unable to convert their opportunities into an equaliser before Nwaiwu’s late dismissal.

The return leg is scheduled to take place in Hungary on Thursday, 27 August. Trabzonspor know they must improve on the first-leg result to continue their UEFA Europa League campaign, while Nwaiwu will begin serving the first game of his UEFA suspension from the sidelines.

His second-match ban will carry over into Trabzonspor’s next applicable UEFA fixture, meaning the defender will remain unavailable for one further European match beyond the Ferencvaros return leg.
