Real Madrid face defensive dilemma as Mourinho weighs Konate gamble against Villarreal

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho must decide whether to risk Ibrahima Konate or use an alternative central-defensive option when his side host Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday evening.

The match, which comes in the eighth round of the Spanish top flight, presents a significant test for Real Madrid, whose defensive resources have been stretched at a delicate stage of the season.

According to Sport, Mourinho is searching for a partner for Antonio Rudiger at the heart of the defence against Villarreal, known as the Yellow Submarine.

Dean Huijsen will miss the fixture through suspension after being sent off in the Madrid derby. Raul Asencio is also unavailable after recently undergoing surgery, while Konate’s fitness remains uncertain after he experienced some pain.

Eder Militao is the only other defender still progressing according to the rehabilitation programme set out for him, leaving Mourinho with a difficult selection decision ahead of the game.

Rudiger, however, is in excellent physical condition. The Germany defender has been focused on producing his best performances for Real Madrid since retiring from international football.

He continued working at the club’s Valdebebas training complex during the international break and intends to maintain the level of reliability Mourinho expects whenever he is called upon.

Real Madrid’s squad list offers some encouragement, with Federico Valverde, Kylian Mbappe and Konate all included for the meeting with Villarreal.

The main question for Mourinho is whether Konate is fit enough to be trusted from the start, despite his recent discomfort, or whether the manager will avoid taking that risk and turn to another solution.

One possibility would be to move Aurelien Tchouameni into central defence. That would provide an alternative alongside Rudiger while allowing Mourinho to protect Konate if the Frenchman is not considered ready for a demanding league fixture.

The decision comes as Real Madrid attempt to navigate a shortage of fully available central defenders. Huijsen’s suspension and Asencio’s recovery have reduced Mourinho’s options, while Konate’s condition leaves the manager waiting before finalising his defensive pairing.

With Rudiger ready and several key players named in the squad, Real Madrid have reasons for optimism. But the choice of his defensive partner remains the central issue before the visit of Villarreal.
