Neuer takes blame for Bayern’s fastest Bundesliga goal conceded in Augsburg draw

Manuel Neuer described his mistake as “ridiculous” after Bayern Munich conceded a Bundesliga-record goal eight seconds into their 2-2 draw at Augsburg.
The Bayern goalkeeper was unable to control a back-pass from Luis Diaz immediately after kick-off, allowing Robin Fellhauer to score into an empty net at the WWK Arena.
Fellhauer’s goal was the fastest in Bundesliga history, beating the previous record of nine seconds, which was jointly held by Kevin Volland and Karim Bellarabi. In an unusual coincidence, Volland’s record-setting goal in 2015 was also scored against Neuer.
“It was a ridiculous mistake by me,” Neuer told reporters after Saturday’s match.
“I should have put the ball onto my left foot because two players were pressing me from the right. Then I tried to find a solution, but I simply should have made a different decision.”
Neuer said he had to recover quickly after the early error, with Bayern still having almost the entire match in which to respond.
“After the goal, the first thing I had to do was pull myself together, take a deep breath and put it behind me,” he added.
“Of course, there was still plenty of hope because it was only the first minute. We still had a chance to turn the game around.”
Bayern eventually levelled through Ismael Saibari in the 55th minute, but Augsburg regained the lead nine minutes later when Rodrigo Ribeiro scored.
Substitute Nathaniel Brown restored parity for the visitors in the 80th minute, although Bayern were unable to complete the comeback.
The match also saw four Bayern goals ruled out for offside. Neuer said his side had created opportunities but had been unable to take advantage of them, while some of the marginal offside decisions had gone against Bayern.
“We had chances, but unfortunately we failed to use them,” he said. “We were also a little unlucky with some of the fine offside decisions.
“It is a match that most of us have never experienced before. It was very strange to score that many goals and then see them disallowed.”
The draw prevented Bayern from moving to the top of the Bundesliga. They remain second on 11 points, two behind Borussia Dortmund.
