Osimhen frustrated as Galatasaray snatch late win at Genclerbirligi

Victor Osimhen was denied seven times as Galatasaray secured a 1-0 away victory over Genclerbirligi with a late own goal in their Matchweek 8 meeting at the Eryaman Stadium in Ankara.
The Nigeria striker started and completed the match, but was unable to convert Galatasaray’s dominance into a goal as Genclerbirligi goalkeeper Irfan Can Egribayat produced a series of important saves.
Osimhen remained Galatasaray’s main attacking threat throughout the contest. He attempted seven shots, more than any other player on the pitch, and had 10 touches in the Genclerbirligi penalty area.
He also created two chances and supplied two key passes as the visitors searched for a breakthrough. Egribayat, however, repeatedly stood in his way, including with an impressive stop to keep out a close-range header from the 27-year-old.
The result was particularly important for Galatasaray, who were looking to recover momentum after their disappointing midweek UEFA Champions League defeat by Barcelona.
Genclerbirligi’s disciplined defensive performance looked likely to earn the hosts a valuable point until the decisive incident arrived in the closing stages.
With two minutes remaining, Egribayat made a costly mistake under pressure during a Galatasaray attack and turned the ball into his own net. The error finally ended Genclerbirligi’s resistance and gave the Turkish champions the lead in the 88th minute.
The own goal proved to be the difference, allowing Galatasaray to leave Ankara with all three points despite Osimhen’s continued frustration in front of goal.
Although the Super Eagles forward did not score, his seven attempts, 10 penalty-area touches, two chances created and two key passes underlined his influence in attack. Galatasaray ultimately secured the result through a late stroke of fortune.
