Manchester United assess four candidates to replace Michael Carrick

Manchester United have begun examining alternative managerial options as pressure increases on Michael Carrick following a run of poor results, according to sources cited by ESPN.

The club reassessed Carrick’s position after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The loss came only days after Manchester United were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League.

United have now gone eight matches without a win in all competitions. They sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation places.

Among the managers being considered are Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle United boss, and Julian Nagelsmann, the former Germany manager.

Kieran McKenna, the former Ipswich Town manager, is also on the list. McKenna made a positive impression on Manchester United officials during discussions with the club in the summer of 2024, before the decision was taken to retain Erik ten Hag.

The club are also understood to have identified Antonio Conte as a possible option. The Italian left Napoli in the summer and, according to the sources, would be prepared to hold talks with Manchester United if approached.

The schedule information accompanying the report lists Bournemouth in the League Cup on 28 October 2026, with Aston Villa and Chelsea involved in Premier League fixtures on 31 October 2026, alongside Manchester United.

Carrick’s future under review

Manchester United’s hierarchy assessed a number of managers before handing Carrick a two-year contract in May. That decision followed a successful spell in which he took charge of the team on a temporary basis.

However, the decline in results has led the club to prepare for the possibility of dismissing him. No formal decision has been announced.

Carrick admitted after the defeat by Bournemouth that he did not know what the future held for him.

“I completely understand the situation and, to be honest, I am not expecting anything specific. I will continue working as normal,” he said.

The result against Bournemouth added to the pressure surrounding Carrick, with United’s league position and extended winless run prompting the club to review its options. The four names under consideration include managers with experience in the Premier League, international football and European club competition.
