Martinez Munuera earns praise for steering tense Barcelona-Real Madrid clasico

Juan Martinez Munuera was one of the outstanding figures at Camp Nou as Real Madrid, led by Jose Mourinho, beat Barcelona with a Kylian Mbappe double in a highly charged clasico.

The Spanish referee was appointed to oversee the biggest match of the season so far, with expectations of tension and controversy high before kick-off. His composed performance ensured the game remained focused on the football rather than being overwhelmed by incidents.

Referee receives widespread praise

According to Mundo Deportivo, Spain’s refereeing community was highly satisfied with Martinez Munuera’s display. The experienced official from Valencia handled the intensity of the occasion calmly and without relying heavily on disciplinary action.

Only six yellow cards were shown during the 90 minutes of physical and tactical competition, with three issued to players from each side. Three of those cautions came in stoppage time, when Mbappe, Dean Huijsen and Karim Adeyemi were booked.

Barcelona’s Gordon and Alejandro Balde, along with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, received the other three yellow cards for offences relating to normal play.

The article also lists Barcelona’s La Liga fixture on 31 October 2026, against Deportivo Alaves, while Racing Santander are listed in La Liga on 1 November 2026 alongside Real Madrid.

Debate over key incidents

Martinez Munuera’s performance was not entirely free of contentious moments. In the 37th minute, Marc Cucurella made a strong challenge on Lamine Yamal.

There was also a more disputed incident when Joao Cancelo caught Diomande from behind. Real Madrid complained that the Video Assistant Referee did not intervene, with Javier Iglesias Villanueva in charge of the VAR team.

Analysts judged that Cancelo’s challenge did not warrant a red card but should at least have resulted in a yellow. They reached a similar conclusion about Eduardo Camavinga’s challenge on Rodrygo, which went unpunished.

Those decisions were viewed as minor details that did not undermine the wider impression of a high-quality refereeing performance.

Appointment kept secret

The Technical Committee of Referees, known as the CTA, took extensive measures to protect Martinez Munuera’s appointment and prevent it from being leaked to the media.

Although he had emerged as a leading candidate from the middle of the previous week, his selection to referee the fifth clasico of his career was not officially confirmed until Saturday.

The performance also reinforced the message delivered recently by referee chief Fran Soto, who proudly described Spanish officials as “the best in the world”.

On a night when many expected refereeing mistakes to dominate the headlines, Martinez Munuera became the other major winner.
