Sarina Wiegman respects FIFA’s verdict on Lauren James misconduct vs Nigeria

By Monsurah Olatunji

England head coach, Sarina Wiegman has reacted to the punishment given to Lauren James following her red card against Nigeria in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16 encounter in Brisbane on Monday.
James has scored three goals and provided three assists in the group stages, making her England’s leading goal scorer in the competition. The Chelsea star, however was dismissed in the 70th minute after stamping Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie during their Round of 16 game.
The offense carried an automatic one-match ban and could have been extended to three games, but James received a two-match suspension, meaning she could still appear in the final if England get there.
However, Sarina Wiegman has said she respects the decision by FIFA and is planning for her team to succeed without James after subduing Colombia to reach the semi-final.
“That is the decision that is made; of course, that is not up to me,” Wiegman said during a press conference on Friday.
“It is two games; that is a fact for us, and we respect that punishment. We take it from here and just hope we get through.”
