Ademola Lookman’s half-time substitutions raise questions over form and rotation

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was substituted at half-time for the third time in four matches as Atletico Madrid defeated Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 on Saturday.

Lookman was replaced by Robin Le Normand at the interval, with Julian Alvarez scoring the only goal of the game in the 48th minute. According to Pulse Sports Nigeria, the Nigerian had no shot, created no chance and made an error which allowed Deportivo to attempt a shot on goal.

The match followed a growing pattern for the 27-year-old, who was also taken off at half-time against Alaves and Espanyol. Soccernet had examined his role in a preview before the Espanyol fixture.

The repeated early withdrawals have prompted questions over whether Atletico manager Diego Simeone is managing Lookman’s workload or responding to a dip in form.

After the Espanyol match, Simeone cited the demands placed on his squad when quoted by Pulse Sports Nigeria. Days later, Legit.ng reported further comments from the Atletico manager, who said: “We need everyone. That’s clear, I’ll say it again.”

Simeone added: “We need fresh legs.”

Lookman has played the full 90 minutes only once this season, in Atletico’s opening-day match against Malaga, according to Transfermarkt figures cited by Legit.ng. By mid-October, he had made nine appearances, including eight starts, and had played about 600 minutes while scoring one goal, Pulse Sports Nigeria reported.

The statistics allow two interpretations. Atletico’s schedule includes domestic and European football, making rotation a logical part of Simeone’s approach. However, Lookman’s limited output also provides some support for the possibility that his performances are influencing the manager’s decisions.

His first-half display against Deportivo, which included no shot, was followed by another interval substitution. It means he has now been removed at half-time in three of his past four games, while his only goal of the season has come across nine appearances.

The situation is also significant for Nigeria. Lookman did not score in the Super Eagles’ qualifiers against Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau, and the double-header against Tanzania in November is central to Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 hopes.

Nigeria coach Chelle will want Lookman to arrive with regular minutes and confidence. Atletico’s next several matches should offer a clearer indication of whether his reduced playing time is primarily the result of squad management, current form, or a combination of both.
