Nigeria’s stand-in captain, William Troost-Ekong has been awarded the player of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, following his remarkable performances in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Super Eagles’ defender was outstanding in the seven matches for the team scoring three goals in the process.
The PAOK Saloniki centre back who featured in all the games for Nigeria find back of the net twice against Ivory Coast and against South Africa to emerge highest scoring defender in the history of the competition.
Unfortunately, his historic goal against the Elephants could not see Nigeria win their fourth AFCON title as they lost 2-1 to the host in the final on Sunday in Abidjan.
The 30-year-old has 71 international appearances with seven goals to his names since making his debut for Super Eagles in 2015 against Chad.
