Al-Ittihad takeover moves forward as two consortiums submit bids

The proposed sale of Al-Ittihad has entered an advanced stage, with two consortiums submitting bids to acquire a majority stake in the Saudi Pro League club.

Saudi media figure Abdullah Flatah said the process had moved beyond preliminary discussions and was now being handled through practical steps, although the identity of the eventual buyer has not been officially disclosed.

Speaking on the programme Al-Manassa on the Thmanyah network, Flatah said the sale process was progressing and expressed hope that it would be completed before the end of the current season.

“I expect and hope the matter will be completed by the end of the season, because the procedures are moving forward and some commitments have entered the current stage,” he said.

The developments suggest Al-Ittihad’s privatisation process is approaching a decisive phase. However, no final agreement has yet been announced and the successful investor has not been confirmed.

The proposed transaction forms part of Saudi Arabia’s wider programme to privatise sports clubs under the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The initiative aims to increase private-sector involvement in sports investment, improve governance and support the financial sustainability of clubs.

Information circulating about the deal indicates that the Public Investment Fund is targeting the sale of 70% of Al-Ittihad’s shares while retaining the remaining 30%. That structure would allow a new investor to take majority ownership, with the fund continuing as a partner in the club.

The move could give Al-Ittihad access to greater private investment, potentially strengthening its financial resources and ability to compete while preserving its historic status and substantial support base.

Although two consortiums are understood to be competing for control, the details and financial value of the bids have not been made public. The identity of the party that will acquire the majority holding also remains unknown.

Flatah’s disclosure points to significant interest in investing in Al-Ittihad, but completion of the deal will depend on the remaining procedures and agreement on final terms between the relevant parties.

Flatah hopes the process will be concluded by the end of the current season, with further developments expected as negotiations continue.

Al-Ittihad are scheduled to face Abha in the Saudi Pro League on 30 October 2026. They will then play Al Ain in the AFC Champions League Elite on 02 November 2026.
