Algeria head coach Farid Benstiti has expressed a positive outlook following his team’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria, praising Super Falcons’ strength while stressing the progress of his young squad.

The match, held at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne-Remo, saw the Super Falcons secure victory with two impressive first-half goals from captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

Ajibade opened the scoring in the 24th minute, skillfully sprinting past the Algerian defense to latch onto a well-placed pass from Oluwatosin Demehin, before lifting the ball over advancing goalkeeper Amel Salah.

She added a second goal just before halftime, launching a powerful shot from 22 yards, set up by Folashade Ijamilusi, that soared into the top corner.

Despite Nigeria’s dominance, Algeria had its chances, with Esther Onyenezide narrowly missing from close range just before halftime, and Ijamilusi forcing two crucial saves from Salah in the second half.

The best opportunity for Algeria came in the 75th minute when forward Gladys Ikene managed to evade Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie but sent her chip just wide of the post.

Reflecting on the match, Benstiti noted, “We have a young team, and the players are trying to understand each other better with each passing game. We love this type of match that helps our telepathy and cohesion.”

He acknowledged Nigeria’s prowess, stating, “Nigeria is a strong team globally, and we are not ashamed to lose to them. However, I believe we will have a better game on Tuesday because we have learned some things here today.”

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu also praised his team’s effort, particularly from the home-based players.

“We are in a rebuilding process, and I must say that a good number of the home-based professionals impressed me. Ajibade, as always, led from the front and gave us great balance going forward,” he said.

Looking ahead to the second leg of the friendly on Tuesday, October 29, at the Onikan Stadium, Madugu expressed his desire to build on the team’s performance.

The Super Falcons, ranked as Africa’s top team, will aim to secure another win against the 12th-ranked Algerians.
