Andriy Lunin sets new 124-year El Clasico record for Real Madrid

Andriy Lunin has become the first goalkeeper in the 124-year history of El Clasico to win at least four of his opening five matches against Barcelona.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper reached the landmark after his side defeated their Catalan rivals 2-1 in La Liga on Sunday. The result gave Lunin a fourth victory in five appearances against Barcelona and further strengthened his record in one of football’s most significant rivalries.

According to Tribuna, no goalkeeper had previously managed four wins in their first five El Clasico matches across the competition’s 124-year history.

Lunin’s sequence began with Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Barcelona in October 2022. He was in goal again when Madrid won 4-1 in January 2024, before recording another success in a 3-2 match in April of the same year.

His latest appearance produced a further 2-1 victory in October 2026, completing a run of four wins from five matches.

The only defeat suffered by Real Madrid with Lunin in goal came in October 2024, when Barcelona secured a 4-0 victory.

The Ukraine international’s latest achievement adds another notable statistic to the history of meetings between the two clubs. It also provides further recognition for a goalkeeper who has continued to demonstrate his ability when selected for major matches, despite being Real Madrid’s second-choice goalkeeper.

Real Madrid’s victory was therefore significant beyond the three points in the La Liga title race, as it also allowed Lunin to establish a record that links his name with the long history of El Clasico.

The listed La Liga fixtures include Barcelona against Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026 and Racing Santander against Real Madrid on 01 November 2026.
