Gavi misses first El Clasico since Barcelona debut

Gavi has been left out of an El Clasico for the first time since making his Barcelona debut, with head coach Hansi Flick deciding not to use the midfielder in the match against Real Madrid.
The decision represents an unusual moment in the 22-year-old’s career, particularly given the importance he places on meetings with Barcelona’s biggest rivals and his combative approach to major matches.
Gavi had made his enthusiasm clear before the game, saying on Saturday: “In Clasico matches, you have to go to war. It does not matter how either team arrives at the match; these are games played to the death.”
However, that intensity was not reflected in his involvement at the stadium. Although his place on the substitutes’ bench was not unexpected, Flick’s decision not to give him any minutes was the significant development.
Gavi has started only two matches this season and has otherwise had limited playing time. His difficulty in establishing himself in the side has become increasingly apparent as the campaign has progressed.
Flick has previously spoken to Gavi privately about his situation, explaining the level of competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield.
“Gavi has great ambition and always wants to play,” Flick said in September. “He played, then he was injured, and after that he returned to playing, but the team is doing well in its current situation and he has to accept that.”
That message suggested Gavi would need to be patient, but his position now appears more difficult. Frenkie de Jong has returned to action and played against Real Madrid, adding another contender in a midfield where Pedri and Rodri appear to have secured their places.
Fermin and Dani Olmo also offer more attacking options, while Marc Bernal’s qualities and position mean he can be preferred to Gavi for minutes in certain situations.
The changing picture could leave Gavi as the last of Flick’s midfield options when the manager rotates his squad. Flick has generally relied on a limited rotation policy, but even within those changes, Gavi’s numbers remain modest.
The omission is particularly notable because of the influence Gavi has traditionally brought to matches of this nature. After overcoming serious physical problems, he now needs to regain consistency and convince Flick that he deserves a regular role in a midfield where competition is becoming stronger.
Gavi remains fully committed to Barcelona and is under contract with the club until 2030. His situation between now and January will nonetheless be closely watched as he attempts to re-establish his place in Flick’s plans.
