Asisat Oshoala’s acrobatic goal gets FIFA Marta Award nomination

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward, Asisat Oshoala’s acrobatic goal for FC Barcelona against SL Benfica got the nod for the 2024 FIFA Marta Award.

The Bay FC player scored the goal during the group stage of last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League for the Spanish side on November 14, 2023.

She received a cross from the wing and acrobatically put the ball into the back of the net.

The goal also won the UEFA Women’s Champions League best goal for last season.

She will contest the award with 10 other goals from Delphine Cascarino (Lyon vs. Benfica), Hegering (Essen vs. Wolfsburg), Sakina Karchaoui (France vs. Sweden), Krumbiegel (Duisburg vs. Hoffenheim), and Marta (Brazil vs. Jamaica).

Others are Matejic (Serbia vs. England), Beth Mead (Arsenal vs. Westham), Moraca (Lazio vs. Bologna), Pelayo (Mexico vs. United States Women’s National Team), and Trinity Rodman (USWNT vs. Japan).

Like the Puskas Award for the men’s category, the Marta Award aims to recognize the best goals scored by women’s footballers.

The Marta Award was named after Brazilian legend Marta and is making its debut at the 2024 FIFA Best Awards.
