“Ask Lookman and Osimhen” — Troost-Ekong urges young Nigerian footballer

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, has shared a powerful message of inspiration with a young Nigerian footballer aspiring to win Africa’s prestigious individual football award.

The 31-year-old Al Kholood centre-back has earned widespread admiration for his leadership qualities both on and off the pitch, inspiring countless fans through his dedication and hard work.

Although Troost-Ekong represented the Netherlands at youth level, he chose to pledge his allegiance to Nigeria, making his senior debut in 2015.

Since then, he has built a reputation as a fierce competitor, leading the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and earning the Player of the Tournament award at the 2023 edition.

Troost-Ekong also holds the record for the highest number of goals scored by a defender in the tournament’s history, with five goals.

Following a bitter end to Nigeria’s game against Zimbabwe, Troost-Ekong took to his official Snapchat, engaging with fans. While some comments were critical, and others were requests for giveaways, one particular message caught his attention.

A fan wrote, “Skippo, any advice for an upcoming African best like me? Just about starting my pro career in Europe now.”

The 2023 AFCON MVP responded candidly, using two of his Super Eagles teammates as examples to motivate the young aspirant.

“You’ll need advice from two people I know that have done it,” Troost-Ekong shared. “A. Lookman and V. Osimhen.

“For both of them, I know it’s dedication, hard work, single-mindedness, and discipline to become your best version. Mola did it starting from the streets in London and Vic did it starting from the streets in Lagos. Anything is possible!!!”

Troost-Ekong’s message stresses the inspiring journeys of Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, both of whom overcame significant challenges to become two of Africa’s top footballers.

In December 2024, Lookman succeeded Osimhen as Africa’s Best, becoming only the sixth Nigerian to win the prestigious award at a glamorous ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.

With such words of wisdom, Troost-Ekong continues to be an influential figure in Nigerian football, mentoring the next generation of stars.
