Augsburg’s 8.4-second shock goal exposes Bayern Munich weakness

Augsburg’s fastest goal in Bundesliga history was the result of a carefully planned tactic rather than a fortunate mistake, according to goalscorer Robin Fellhauer, as the hosts held Bayern Munich to a 2-2 draw.

Fellhauer revealed that Augsburg had studied Bayern’s routine from kick-off, which regularly sees the ball played back to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer before he sends it forward.

“I was given a clear task: get beyond Alphonso Davies and press Neuer so he could not control the ball,” Fellhauer told German newspaper Bild.

The 2025 summer signing from Elversberg, who joined Augsburg for 700,000 euros, said the opportunity emerged when the ball took an unexpected bounce in front of Neuer.

“I got past Davies relatively easily, then noticed that the ball had bounced unexpectedly in front of Neuer. I rushed towards him and applied pressure from as close as possible,” he added.

The plan worked almost immediately. Harry Kane passed the ball to Neuer at the start of the match, but the Bayern goalkeeper misjudged the bounce. Fellhauer reached the loose ball and finished into an unguarded net after only 8.4 seconds.

The goal made Fellhauer the fastest scorer in Bundesliga history, beating the previous record of nine seconds, jointly held by Karim Bellarabi and Kevin Volland. Both players congratulated him after his record-breaking effort.

Neuer acknowledged that Bayern have relied on the routine for a long time.

“It is the traditional strategy, and we have been following it for a long time,” he told Bild.

However, the error could prompt Bayern’s coaching staff to reconsider whether continuing with the approach is worthwhile in future matches.

Augsburg have produced similar surprises against Bayern before. In the 2018-19 season, they took the lead after only 12 seconds when Leon Goretzka accidentally scored an own goal, underlining the threat they have posed in this fixture over time.

Their impact on this occasion extended well beyond the opening goal. Augsburg absorbed sustained Bayern pressure through a well-organised defence and looked to attack quickly on the counter, allowing them to remain in contention for a positive result until the final whistle.

Manager Manuel Baum praised the collective effort, including the contributions of both his starting players and substitutes.

“It was a fantastic team performance, regardless of who started the match or who came on as a substitute,” Baum said. “That is why it would not be appropriate to single out any player today. I am very proud of the players and everyone who was present in the stadium.”

Although Augsburg’s plan unsettled Bayern, the visitors also contributed to the result. Mistakes from the Bavarian side played a part in allowing Augsburg to recover and secure the draw.
