Awoniyi earns Deeney’s praise after Coventry City goal against Sunderland

Taiwo Awoniyi’s return to form has been recognised by former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, who selected the Nigerian forward in his BBC Team of the Week after Coventry City’s 3-1 win over Sunderland.
Deeney called Awoniyi’s effort an “unbelievable solo goal”, praising the striker for making a decisive impact after a difficult start to the campaign.
Awoniyi scored Coventry’s second goal in the 37th minute of Saturday’s match, helping Frank Lampard’s side claim an important victory in their fight to remain in the Premier League.
The forward won the ball in Sunderland’s half and carried it into the penalty area. He avoided Granit Xhaka’s challenge before shooting at goal, with the effort taking a deflection on its way into the net.
It was Awoniyi’s first Premier League goal in Coventry colours since his summer move from Nottingham Forest.
Deeney, who chooses a Premier League Team of the Week for BBC Sport, said Awoniyi’s contribution could have a major bearing on Coventry’s survival hopes.
“It’s really good to see the big fella back playing and being in a situation where he can impose himself,” Deeney said.
“If Coventry are to stay up, he’s going to be why.”
Awoniyi’s performance followed a difficult spell that included a red card during Coventry’s 5-0 defeat by Brighton in September. His return to the starting line-up against Sunderland gave Lampard’s side an immediate lift.
The victory moved Coventry out of the relegation zone, while Sunderland remained at the foot of the table after another disappointing result.
Awoniyi has now scored twice in eight appearances in all competitions for Coventry. His latest display provides encouragement for the club as it continues its battle for survival.
The goal also underlined the influence the Nigeria forward can have when he is fit and confident. For Coventry, his return to form could be an important development in a season in which every goal and point carries significant value.
