Portugal FA promises proper tribute after Cristiano Ronaldo retires from international football

The Portuguese Football Federation has pledged to organise a fitting farewell for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Al Nassr forward announced his retirement from international football on Thursday.

Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain, made the decision in a major surprise after previously indicating that he wanted to continue representing his country. His announcement came around a month after his long-standing rival Lionel Messi had also announced his retirement from international football.

In an official statement, the Portuguese Football Federation expressed its “deepest and most sincere gratitude” to its “eternal captain” following his decision to end his international career.

The federation said it wanted to publicly recognise and thank Ronaldo for an exceptional period of service to Portugal, describing him as much more than an outstanding athlete.

“He was an inspiring leader, an example of dedication and the ultimate symbol of the spirit of our national team,” the statement said.

Ronaldo finishes with 234 international appearances and 146 goals for Portugal. During what the federation called a legendary international career, he carried the country, broke records and led the team through moments that would remain permanently in the history of Portuguese football.

The statement added that every drop of sweat, decisive goal and occasion on which Ronaldo proudly wore the captain’s armband reflected his complete devotion to the Portugal shirt.

The federation also said his influence extended beyond football, claiming that Ronaldo had raised Portugal’s profile and inspired generations of young people who dreamed of following in his footsteps.

“For many of us, he is the greatest player of all time,” it said.

Portugal plan Ronaldo tribute

The Portuguese Football Federation said it would not allow Ronaldo’s departure to pass without an appropriate celebration.

Its “firm and great desire”, according to the statement, is to organise, plan and work actively with Ronaldo on a tribute worthy of his career. The event would give supporters and the country an opportunity to applaud and celebrate once more the player who had given them so much.

“Thank you for everything, captain. This will always be your home,” the federation said in its closing message, adding: “Let us move towards goal 1000.”

Portugal are listed to face Denmark in the Nations League – Path One on 14 November 2026.

Ronaldo’s retirement brings an end to his international career with Portugal, during which he served as captain and established the figures highlighted by the federation: 234 appearances and 146 goals.
