Awoniyi Nets Goal Despite Mouscron’s Setback Against Olayinka’s Zulte-Waregem

In a gripping Belgian Jupiler League encounter on Sunday, former Nigeria youth international Taiwo Awoniyi showcased his prowess by scoring for Royal Excel Mouscron, although the team ultimately faced a 2-1 defeat away to Zulte-Waregem, according to a report by Completesportsnigeria.com.

Awoniyi, who is on loan from Liverpool and marked his second goal in five Belgian Jupiler League appearances this season, made a significant impact by opening the scoring in the 15th minute. However, Zulte-Waregem responded swiftly, with Aaron Leya Iseka leveling the scoreline to 1-1 in the 47th minute. The home team continued their momentum, taking the lead in the 65th minute, courtesy of a goal from Sandy Walsh.

Despite the competitive nature of the match, Mouscron suffered a setback as Christopher Diedhiou received a straight red card, leaving them with 10 men for the remaining 14 minutes.

Zulte-Waregem’s Nigerian striker, Peter Olayinka, played the full 90 minutes, contributing significantly to his team’s performance.

The defeat places Mouscron in the fifth position on the league table with 13 points, trailing five points behind the leaders, Club Brugge, who currently stand at 18 points. The 16-team Belgian Jupiler League continues to showcase intense competition, with Awoniyi’s standout performance adding a noteworthy chapter to the ongoing football narrative.
