Baena honours Tenerife striker before Atletico’s Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich

Atletico de Madrid midfielder Alex Baena paid tribute to Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel before Tuesday’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich at the Metropolitano.

De Miguel, 30, died after suffering a serious collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Ono during their Segunda Division match on Monday evening.

Tenerife confirmed the player’s death in a statement issued on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at 08:00.

“With broken hearts, a lump in our throats and unable to believe what has happened, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of its player Jesus de Miguel Almeida, which occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at eight o’clock,” the club said.

According to Marca, Baena arrived at the stadium wearing an official Atletico de Madrid shirt with De Miguel’s name printed on the back specifically for the occasion.

The Spain international, a World Cup winner, represented the Atletico squad in paying tribute to the Tenerife player. Atletico had been among the clubs using their social media channels throughout the morning to express their condolences following the tragedy.

Baena is a key part of Diego Simeone’s team for the meeting with the Bundesliga champions, which forms part of the fourth round of the Champions League league phase.

UEFA ordered a minute’s silence before every match in the round as a mark of respect for De Miguel. The Spanish Football Federation also announced three days of mourning and suspended its fixtures during that period.
