Barcelona starlet Alex Gonzalez makes instant impact in pre-season win under Hansi Flick

Barcelona’s teenage winger Alex Gonzalez delivered a goal and an assist in a standout second-half cameo as Hansi Flick’s side opened their pre-season campaign with a 4-1 friendly victory over Europa at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

The Catalan club dominated throughout the match, but it was Gonzalez who made the most striking impression after coming on at half-time, quickly underlining why he is regarded as one of the most promising talents in La Masia.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the 19-year-old’s influence was “immediate”, capping his second week of work under new head coach Flick in eye-catching fashion.

Breakthrough performance in front of Flick

Flick handed Gonzalez a place in the first-team pre-season squad on the back of a strong finish to the 2025-26 campaign with Barcelona’s youth side, where the winger’s form had already drawn internal praise.

Gonzalez, who joined Barcelona from Damm, made his first appearance for a team coached by Pol Planas at the start of April. He quickly turned that opportunity into a regular starting role, earning promotion through the ranks in a short space of time.

Ten minutes later, the winger was on the scoresheet himself. Arriving from the opposite side, Gonzalez capitalised on a precise delivery from Toni Fernandez and calmly converted to net Barcelona’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

Those two contributions effectively killed off the contest, even though the final scoreline was of secondary importance to Flick, whose focus is on assessing his squad and building fitness ahead of the new season.

Chance for La Masia talents amid World Cup absences

With several senior players unavailable due to their involvement at the World Cup, Flick used the encounter to take a closer look at some of the most highly rated prospects from Barcelona’s academy.

The absence of established first-team regulars opened the door for youngsters to train and play alongside prominent senior figures such as Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez and Marc Bernal during the early stages of pre-season.
