Christantus Uche facing season-long absence after reported knee injury
Nigeria international midfielder Christantus Uche is reportedly set to undergo surgery and could miss the entirety of next season after suffering a knee injury during Getafe’s 1-0 pre-season defeat by AS Monaco.
Uche, who returned to Getafe following an unsuccessful loan spell with English Premier League club Crystal Palace, was introduced as a second-half substitute. His appearance was cut short, however, as he was taken from the field on a stretcher shortly after coming on.
The incident followed a heavy challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who was shown a red card. The tackle initially raised serious concerns because Mawissa’s boot made forceful contact with Uche’s chin.
Getafe later published a medical update after carrying out initial tests and a clinical examination. The club’s first assessment appeared less serious than the immediate reaction to the incident had suggested.
“After the first tests and clinical examination carried out by the club’s medical services, Christantus Uche presents a contusion to the kneecap of his right leg, caused by the blow suffered during the match against AS Monaco.”
However, more recent reports from Spain claim the midfielder has suffered several tears to the ligaments in his knee. Those reports say he will require surgery and will be unavailable for the whole of the next campaign.
The extent of the injury has therefore raised further concern despite Getafe’s initial diagnosis identifying a contusion to the kneecap of Uche’s right leg. The latest reports have not been accompanied by a further medical statement from the club in the information available.
Uche had returned to Getafe after spending time on loan at Crystal Palace, where his spell was described as unsuccessful. He was hoping to make an impact for his parent club during pre-season before his involvement against AS Monaco ended prematurely.
The match finished 1-0 to Monaco, but the result was overshadowed by Uche’s injury and Mawissa’s dismissal. The challenge and its aftermath left players and staff fearing a serious problem, with the midfielder requiring treatment before being removed from the pitch.
If the latest reports are confirmed, Uche would face a lengthy period on the sidelines and miss the entirety of next season. The Nigerian international’s expected absence would represent a significant setback as he attempts to re-establish himself after his return from England.
