Cristiano Ronaldo departure prompts Portuguese government intervention in Jorge Jesus dispute

Cristiano Ronaldo’s unexpected departure from Portugal’s training camp has escalated into a dispute involving the country’s prime minister, with Luis Montenegro reportedly contacting Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca to arrange a meeting with national team manager Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo left the camp on Wednesday, with tensions continuing to dominate coverage in the Portuguese media as Portugal prepare to face Denmark in the third round of the Nations League on Thursday evening.
The disagreement began when Ronaldo was left on the substitutes’ bench for the whole of Portugal’s previous Nations League match against Norway. Portugal won that game 2-1, but the decision reportedly angered the Al Nassr captain.
The forward then refused to take part in training after the Norway match. He subsequently held talks with Jesus, and the situation appeared to have calmed between the two men.
However, tensions resurfaced at Jesus’ news conference before the Denmark fixture. The Portugal manager said no player would change his thinking, and that no other figure in football would do so either.
Ronaldo then left the Portugal camp and travelled to Madrid.
Portuguese newspaper Record reported on Thursday afternoon that the dispute had reached the highest levels of the country’s political establishment.
According to the report, Montenegro contacted Proenca in an effort to organise a meeting with Jesus after Ronaldo’s departure. The prime minister is said to want to speak to the manager because of the good relationship between the two men.
Portuguese broadcaster SIC also reported that Montenegro had spoken directly to Ronaldo about the situation.
The developments have added a political dimension to a disagreement that began with Ronaldo’s omission from the starting line-up against Norway and intensified after Jesus’ comments ahead of the Denmark match.
