Saudi pundit backs UAE to win Gulf Cup despite Saudi Arabia hopes

Saudi media personality Saud Al-Sarami has named the United Arab Emirates as his favourite to win the current Gulf Cup, being held in Jeddah, despite Saudi Arabia remaining in contention.

Saudi Arabia are preparing to face Qatar, with the winners set to meet the victor of the other semi-final between Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking on Al Arabiya FM, Al-Sarami said Saudi Arabia had been subjected to what he described as a media campaign in the build-up to the match.

“Saudi Arabia’s national team has been exposed to a media game recently,” he said. “I hope our team is helped by creating the right surrounding environment and separating it from heated issues 48 hours before the eagerly anticipated match.”

Al-Sarami also called for greater support for the players as they prepare for the tie against Qatar.

“There are some satellite and media channels trying to undermine our team,” he added. “But we must support all the players so they can overcome the obstacle of Qatar.”

Despite his backing for Saudi Arabia to progress, Al-Sarami believes the United Arab Emirates are best placed to claim the trophy.

“I think the United Arab Emirates are the leading favourites to win the title because, in my humble view, they are the best prepared team,” he said.

His comments were broadcast by Al Arabiya FM on 1 October 2026.
