Cristiano Ronaldo video reignites Al-Hilal penalty debate after Darwin Nunez incident

Cristiano Ronaldo has become involved in fresh controversy involving Al-Hilal after a video appeared to show the Al-Nassr captain discussing a disputed penalty appeal with Darwin Nunez during the two sides’ Roshn Saudi League meeting.

Nunez went down inside the Al-Nassr penalty area in the 39th minute of the eighth-round fixture after contact with one of the club’s defenders. The Al-Diriyah striker appealed for a penalty, but the referee allowed play to continue after reviewing the incident using video assistant referee technology.

During a subsequent corner, Ronaldo approached Nunez and spoke to him about the incident. The exchange quickly attracted widespread attention on social media, with some viewers interpreting the Portugal forward’s remarks as a sarcastic comment about the decision.

One interpretation suggested Ronaldo was implying that a penalty might have been awarded had Nunez been wearing an Al-Hilal shirt rather than playing for Al-Diriyah.

However, the precise words exchanged by the two players cannot be established conclusively from the circulating footage. The interpretation that Ronaldo was mocking Al-Hilal therefore remains speculation based on the video, rather than a confirmed statement from the Al-Nassr captain.

The incident has drawn additional attention because Nunez joined Al-Diriyah on loan until the end of the current season after previously playing for Al-Hilal. That background added another dimension to the conversation between the Uruguayan striker and Ronaldo, amid the longstanding sensitivity between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal supporters over refereeing decisions.

The penalty appeal itself was also debated after the match. Former international referee Saad Al-Kathiri said Nunez was not entitled to a spot-kick, arguing that the position of the Al-Nassr defender’s hand had no impact on the play and that the decision to allow the match to continue was correct.

A post shared by the account @1955Mnbr on 10 October 2026 attributed the following words to Ronaldo: “The referee would award a penalty if you were with Al-Hilal only.”

The clip has consequently turned one moment from the Al-Nassr-Al-Diriyah match into another source of rivalry between supporters of Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, combining an unresolved refereeing debate with the usual tension between the two clubs.
