Dessers scores, Balogun shines as Rangers extend unbeaten run
By Wale Mustapha
Nigerian duo of Cyril Dessers and Leon Balogun shone for Glasgow Rangers on Sunday as they extended their unbeaten start under manager Phillipe Clement to seven games with a 2-0 win over Livingston.
The two Super Eagles players who were not listed in Jose Peseiro’s team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers coming up later in the week were superb in the match that was almost marred by VAR.
While Dessers scored one of the goals, his first from as many games for Rangers, Balogun ensured the visitors kept a clean sheet with solid defending.
Both Connor Goldson and James Tavernier could have given Rangers the lead before Dessers shot them front at half time.
Tavernier who had earlier missed a penalty in the first half atone for his earlier miss and scored another one that was awarded to the visitors.
The victory, however pilled more pressure on Celtic at the top as Clement continued to rebuild a new Rangers to delight of its fans.
It is expected that Peseiro will be convinced with the performances of both Balogun and Dessers to give them a look in for the subsequent Super Eagles’ games especially the team for the 2023 African Cup of Nations, AFCON coming up in January.
