By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward Esther Okoronkwo was the heroine as she scored two goals to lift Canadian Northern Super League side AFC Toronto to a 2-1 win over Calgary FC.

She scored the first goal in the 25th minute from a good finish inside the box after a one-two play with her opponents.

The former Costa Adeje Tenerife player doubled her new side’s lead in the 54th minute with a screamer from outside the box, which reached the top corner.

Calgary FC reduced the deficit in the 85th minute but it couldn’t stop the host from their first home win.

Okoronkwo became the first player to score for her team at home putting the ball at the back of the net twice.

She, alongside Ngozi Okobi Ekeoghene, are the two Nigerian players in the Canadian women’s league.

The Canadian Northern Super League is in its maiden season of professional women’s football in the country.
