Former Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie has voiced his support for Augustine Eguavoen to be officially named the head coach of the national team.
Odemwingie, who has transitioned to golf after retiring from professional football, reflected on Eguavoen’s impact during his early career at Bendel Insurance.
He believes Eguavoen has the qualities and qualifications necessary for success in the role.
“Eguavoen was the general manager when I signed my first professional contract with Bendel Insurance under him. He’s a lesson to our country,” Odemwingie said in an interview with Brila FM.
“He’s well-spoken, a committed player, and now a dedicated coach. He approaches the job with passion; it’s his life. He has always been reliable, and he’s currently doing well with 7 points from 3 games.”
Odemwingie praised Eguavoen’s dedication and expressed optimism about his plans for the team.
“He’s involved with CAF, takes coaching courses, and is a blessing to have. Whether he’s appointed permanently or not, he’s always ready for the job because it’s home for him, and it’s his passion.”
Wishing Eguavoen success in his current role, Odemwingie emphasized the importance of the coach’s desires for the future.
“If he wants the job permanently and makes that clear, he will present his plans to the NFF. If they align with their vision, he could be appointed. He’s done well in the past and continues to perform admirably.”
Eguavoen has led the Super Eagles to two wins in three matches since taking over as interim coach of the national team.
