Flying Eagles miss out on 2024 WAFU-B U-20 Championship honours list

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

After successfully defending the 2024 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) title in Togo, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles found themselves absent from the tournament’s individual honors list.

The Nigerian team clinched the championship with a 2-1 victory over Ghana in the final, thanks to a remarkable brace from Kparobo Ariehri.

Despite their triumph, players from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire were recognized with the tournament’s top awards.

Yvann Birama Konan from Côte d’Ivoire was named the Best Goalkeeper, while Ghana’s Jerry Afriyie earned the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) and also claimed the Highest Goal Scorer award, despite his team finishing as runners-up.

With their final match performance, both Nigeria and Ghana will represent WAFU-B at the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Throughout the tournament, Nigeria showcased strong form, winning three of their four matches in Lome, Togo, solidifying their position as a dominant force in the region.
