Genc backs Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu to rediscover scoring form

Turkish football commentator Serkan Genc believes Paul Onuachu can recover from a difficult start to the season and again become a key figure for Trabzonspor.

The Nigeria international returned from injury in Trabzonspor’s 2-0 Turkish Super Lig win over Gaziantep FK, but was unable to score before being replaced after 63 minutes.

Genc admitted he was disappointed by the 32-year-old’s display, although he insisted Onuachu remains capable of regaining the form that made him one of the most important players at the club last season.

Onuachu scored 22 league goals during the 2025/26 campaign and finished as the Super Lig’s top scorer, setting a high standard for his performances this season.

“I was expecting Onuachu to make a comeback. Onuachu is a quality player. We criticize his performance. He was the player who carried Trabzonspor’s goal-scoring burden last year,” Genc said, as quoted by 61saat.

The commentator called on Onuachu to reproduce the performances that made him one of the most discussed players in Turkish football last season.

“We didn’t see him last night. I hope he recovers. Onuachu, don’t you ever eat kuymak (a type of Turkish dish) or kale?

“You were last year’s top scorer. You were the player who was talked about the most. We were talking about Onuachu all over the field. He will definitely get himself together,” he added.

Onuachu has scored three goals in 11 appearances across all competitions during the current campaign.

Two of those goals came in one Turkish Super Lig match against Genclerbirligi. His other goal was scored against KuPS in the Conference League.

His progress has also been disrupted by injuries. Onuachu scored early in Trabzonspor’s 4-2 victory over KuPS on October 15, but was substituted after 10 minutes after suffering a setback.

The injury then kept him out of matches against Besiktas, Hearts and Rizespor.

Genc’s comments came after Onuachu’s return against Gaziantep FK, a game Trabzonspor won without requiring a goal from their leading scorer of last season. The striker will now aim to build up his fitness and regain the consistency that previously made him central to the club’s attack.
