“Give him time to keep building” – John Ogu urges NFF to keep Eguavoen with Eagles
By Wale Mustapha
Former international John Ogu has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to retain Austin Eguavoen as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Eguavoen was appointed on an interim basis to guide the team through two crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, following a delay in securing a permanent coach.
Under Eguavoen’s interim leadership, the Super Eagles delivered a convincing 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and secured a solid goalless draw against Rwanda.
Impressed by these performances, Ogu took to Twitter to advocate for Eguavoen’s continued role, stating, “Dear @thenff, Please keep coach @coacheguavoen. Give him time to keep building the team moving forward.”
Eguavoen’s interim appointment was initially set to cover only these two matches, but his positive impact has prompted calls from players and fans alike for his retention.
The NFF now faces a decision on whether to extend Eguavoen’s tenure or pursue other coaching options ahead of the next round of AFCON qualifiers in October 2024.
