Golden Arrows shock Kaizer Chiefs to reach MTN8 semi-finals
Golden Arrows produced a major MTN8 upset by defeating Kaizer Chiefs, whose hopes of securing early silverware have been ended by a narrow home defeat. The result sends Arrows through to the semi-finals, where they will face Mamelodi Sundowns.
Kaizer Chiefs controlled much of the match and created the clearer opportunities, especially during an opening half in which they repeatedly threatened the Golden Arrows defence. However, Fernando Da Cruz’s side could not turn their territorial dominance into a goal.
The decisive moment came eight minutes after half-time. Right-back Khulekani Shezi struck a powerful effort in the 53rd minute, beating Brandon Petersen at his near post and silencing the home crowd.
For long periods, Chiefs had looked the more likely team to break the deadlock. Their build-up play created several promising openings, but the finishing required to punish Arrows was missing. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Lebohang Maboe were among the players unable to convert chances that could have changed the course of the contest.
The failure to take those opportunities became increasingly costly once Shezi found the net. Golden Arrows were able to protect their advantage despite the pressure applied by Chiefs after the interval.
In an attempt to find an equaliser, Da Cruz introduced substitutes, including new signing Langelihle Phili. Chiefs continued to push forward and sought to increase the intensity of their attack as the match entered its closing stages.
There were further chances for Thabiso Monyane and Mduduzi Shabalala, but neither could find a way past the Arrows defence. The visitors remained organised under sustained pressure and held on for a significant victory.
The defeat means Kaizer Chiefs will not challenge for the MTN8 trophy this season, ending their hopes of claiming silverware at the earliest stage of the campaign. It also extends the club’s wait for an MTN8 title to 12 years.
Golden Arrows, meanwhile, advance to the last four after surviving Chiefs’ extended spell of pressure and making the most of the key opportunity that came their way. Their reward is a semi-final meeting with Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chiefs are left to reflect on a match in which missed chances proved decisive.
