Hansi Flick urges Barcelona fans to believe as Al Ahly await in Joan Gamper Trophy
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick says his side are ready to fight for every trophy this season as they prepare to face Egyptian club Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Wednesday.
The friendly will be played at Spotify Camp Nou and represents Barcelona’s final match before the start of their competitive campaign. Flick used his message to supporters ahead of the game to praise the quality within his squad and acknowledge the backing he and his family have received from the club.
“I would like to start by thanking you for your support last season, and by welcoming our new players and members of the coaching staff. We are happy to have you with us,” Flick said.
The German also spoke emotionally about the support he received after the death of his father in May.
“I have something emotional to say. In May last year, when I lost my father, I felt an extraordinary amount of support and love from every member of the Barcelona family. For me and my family, that was unbelievable,” he added.
Flick will begin his second season in charge of Barcelona when they travel to face Elche in their opening La Liga fixture on Sunday.
The manager believes the club have assembled a squad capable of competing at the highest level, while giving credit to sporting director Deco, president Joan Laporta and others involved in shaping the team.
“We will start the new season next Sunday in Elche. I think we have a wonderful team with a lot of quality, and that is thanks to Deco, the president and everyone who has played a part in making it happen,” Flick said.
“We are ready to work hard, day after day, to fight for every trophy. For that, we need all of you. We need your support, your energy and your passion. Long live Barcelona, and long live Catalonia.”
Barcelona are seeking to retain the La Liga title for a third consecutive season. They will also attempt to win the UEFA Champions League, a competition they have not lifted since their most recent triumph in 2015.
The meeting with Al Ahly is being staged as part of the Joan Gamper Trophy, Barcelona’s traditional pre-season friendly, and will give Flick another opportunity to assess his players before the competitive schedule begins.
The match at Spotify Camp Nou comes with attention focused on whether Barcelona can build on their domestic success and challenge for honours on all fronts. Flick’s message made clear that he expects effort and commitment from his players, while also calling on the supporters to remain closely involved throughout the campaign.
